I've Thought About This

I wasn't going to post this. But. I am seriously trying to make myself feel better. It's my birthday and I'm allowed to say what I need to say.

Sunday, on our way home from visiting with our younger college student, we stopped at the Marine Corps exchange at Quantico. Like many exchanges the first thing you encounter is the jewelry department. It is here that I find out that my husband hasn't bought me a birthday gift. It is on the remainder of the ride home that I find out that he decided that I had spent enough money Agnes Scott and that was my birthday present.

Yesterday if that lovely framed piece hadn't been in someone else's possession, I would have thrown it off the balcony.

I've never felt less special on my birthday than I do today.

That does suck.

Oh, Jo. I am so sorry to hear that. I know sometimes we have not given each other birthday gifts because of deadline pressures, but the rule in our family is SOMETHING for birthdays and Christmas. Sometimes it is small, sometimes it is preplanned and not a surprise, but there should be SOMETHING. He should have bought you something then and there as my husband did at Christmas (ok, not a surprise and not particularly personally from him since I picked it out myself, but it certainly fits the rule of SOMETHING and I am wearing my new small ring right now). Christmas of 2006 I asked for twelve small, inexpensive things and got an assortment of surprises. Husbands should know by now it is the thought that counts and not the size of the present.

Oh, I'm so sorry! Nobody should have a crappy birthday and it was terrible of your husband to say what he did. It's one thing to present you with the materials or the cash for a project - AHEAD OF TIME. It's entirely another to use it as an excuse not to treat your wife to a special birthday.

I'm sending him a big, fat smack upside the head and a great big hug for you!

Well, having seen Agnes Scott in person at Scarlet Thread on Saturday, I'd say that you would only be punishing the Woodlawn attendees if AS ended up airborne. It's absolutely gorgeous, and the frame is perfect.

That said, my sympathies. Feeling blue on your birthday just plain sucks.

I sincerely hope you've had a nice birthday. I always look forward to reading your blog. Your Agnes Scott piece was absolutely stunning. I don't usually leave comments, but I wanted you to know how much you brighten my day. Debra in NC.
